5 Tips On What To Do When the Scale Stalls After Bariatric Surgery
The best part about bariatric surgery is the honeymoon period. During those first few months, and even the first year, the weight just falls off you. I remember the first couple months were magical. I was sometimes losing anywhere between 5-10 pounds a week! It was an incredible feeling and gave me so much motivation to keep going strong. It is so important that you enjoy those first few months because this is when you are going to see your strongest weight loss.
As magical as the honeymoon stage is, it doesn’t last. Your weight loss will slow down, and that is normal. As a weight loss patient, you must be prepared for the highs and the lows you will experience after WLS. I remember I really struggled with only losing ½ pound to 1 pound a week because I was so used to those strong numbers in the beginning. It took me a long time to get past that frustration and focus on the things that really mattered. Here are some tips to help you when you don’t see the scale going down as fast anymore:
1. Pay attention to your clothes. Are they fitting better? Are you able to go down in size? Maybe you are finally able to wear your skinny jeans in the back of your closet!
2. Take measurements! Hopefully you took some at the beginning of your journey that you can compare to, but if not now is the time to start! Even if you don’t see movement on the scale, you’ll be surprised how much your measurements change.
3. Watch for the simple things. This could be things such as fitting in chairs or airplane seats for the first time. As someone who spent many years morbidly obese, one of the best feelings was when I was finally able to fit in an airplane seat without feeling like I was sitting on the person next to me.
4. Change it up! If you have been eating the same thing and/or exercising the same way, do something different. Sometimes your body just needs a change to push it back into overdrive.
5. Take a deep breath and enjoy the journey. It might be frustrating to see less weight loss on the scale, but that’s not all that matters on this weight loss journey. You are getting healthier and becoming a stronger version of you. Be patient and stay on track. YOU GOT THIS!
